Established in 2018, Martin Wale Consulting Inc. is a specialized consultancy and coaching firm offering high-quality support for organizations working with or employing physicians, and for physicians themselves. My methodology seeks foundational assumptions (which may be wrong) or blind spots, understanding conflict and its origins, using deep listening and analysis, reformulating issues, and working towards novel solutions. The skillset is very similar whether working as an external reviewer, or with a physician as their coach. Truth and fairness are paramount.

The Confluence of Coaching and Consulting
During my 30-year career as a medical leader working both in hospital practice and public health, I was always most drawn to those problems which seemed to persist despite efforts to resolve them. Organizations are made of people, and pretty much all problems in organizations have embedded people aspects. Successive medical leadership roles involved me in troubleshooting, giving me experience in the community, in hospitals and health authorities, and for national organizations such as the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. I didn’t plan a career working on those problems most physicians avoid at all costs, but I found I was good at untangling issues and getting at the underlying problems; enabling solutions to emerge even where problems were long-standing and considered intractable. This experience led to me being recruited from the UK to Canada to work on seemingly intractable problems with infection control.
Reviews have been part of my work since the late 1990’s, whether commissioning or conducting them, or implementing their recommendations. My last job as a BC health authority medical leader included an external review commissioned by the Ministry of Health, of progress made with quality improvement in medical imaging across the province over the last 10 years.
Martin Wale Consulting Inc. came into being in 2018, after I left the health authority and began to conduct properly independent external reviews. However, I realized that there was something missing. My skillset enables me to understand organizational issues, and that same skillset enables me to bring my experience of working constructively with conflict to physicians and medical leaders. I added formal training as an executive coach, subsequent training as a Narrative Coach ©, and the use of the WE-I instrument, specifically for supporting those in conflict.
This confluence of coaching and consulting provides my clients a comprehensive service, achieving positive and enduring productive outcomes for all involved parties.
